メルボルンで１０ヶ月留学をしている優衣です。

 

今日は留学で学んだ発音の違いや異文化交流について話したいと思います。

 

 

英語と日本語の発音を比べてみると、たくさんの違いが見受けられますよね。

 

'R'と'L'は未だに注意されます。

 

反対にこちらの人は'りょ'の発音が難しくて、'りよ'という2文字に聞こえたり、'ど'に聞こえたり、なんてこともよくあります。

 

ペルシャ語も同様に、私達には馴染みのない発音がいくつかあります。'kh'と'gh'です。

 

なぜペルシャ語かというと、 私のクラスメイトにペルシャ語を母国語とするイランの友達がいるんです。

 

当初は彼女の国の文化どころか、ペルシャ語ってアラビア語と同じじゃないの？

 

と思っていたくらいで 何も知りませんでした。

 

 

今では伝統料理から踊りまで、あらゆるイラン文化に詳しくなりました。 

 

お互いの言語交換のおかげ？で私がペルシャ語でありがとう、彼女は日本語でどういたしまして！

 

と返事をするのが恒例に。

 

文法から学ぶ日本の言語教育も良いけれど、口伝えから学ぶ言語教育も素晴らしいですよ。

 

良き師を持ったおかげで、他のイランの友人から'綺麗な発音ね！'と褒められるまでになりました。

 

今の時代、留学なんてしなくてもどこでも英語は学べます。

 

 

でも、オーストラリアでの留学生活は多種多様な文化交換ができるだけじゃなくて、

 

私が彼女を通してペルシャ語に出会ったみたいに、考えもしなかった選択肢をたくさん与えてくれます。

 

毎日の授業はもちろん、彼女とは誕生日のお祝いをしたり、 グレートオーシャンロードへ旅行に行ったり、

 

ハロウィンパーティに参加したり。

 

 

 

最近はAussie(オーストラリア人)の真似をして'G'day mate!'(よお兄弟！みたいなニュアンス。)

 

と俗語を多用して話したり。笑

 

気づけば10ヶ月留学もあっという間に折り返し。

 

ホームシックにも無縁ののびのびとした生活を送っている私ですが、

 

帰国後にオーストラリアシックになるのは間違いないです。

 

Considering pronunciation between the two languages, we can find many differences. For example, it is difficult for Japanese to recognise 'r' and 'l' correctly. On the other hand, English speakers find it difficult to say 'ryo' sound. Here is another example. Persian has ‘kh’ and ‘gh’ sounds which are difficult for Japanese people to pronounce. Persian is the major language in Iran, Uzbekistan, Tajikistan and Azerbaijan. The first time, I didn't know anything about Persian. Since I've got an Iranian friend, I've learned their traditional food, instruments, dancing and their language. Now I think that I have known them for ages. She teaches me dozens of words and the other way around; I do the same things for her. She doesn't teach me typical grammar instead she gives me colloquial phrases. Who can study the language without a native speaker? It is believed that people can study English everywhere. Studying English in Australia gives you access to a variety of backgrounds through different cultural communities and making our vision wide. We celebrated my Iranian friend's birthday and we went to the Great Ocean Road, we had a party. We are amazing friends and we help each other in the class. Frankly, I've not missed my family or felt homesick, however, I'm pretty sure that I'm going to miss my friends when I go back to Japan.
